How to Motivate Yourself to Win in Sports?
If there’s anything that occupies high importance in sports, it is motivation. It is motivation that can make people realize unknown potential inside them. Thus enhancing motivation forms a core of sports studies. It includes a change in attitude and development of a positive mindset.
Individuals having self-motivation set a different example from the usual run-off-the-mill people, and pursue the goals of their life with unwavering intention. Thus it is their strong determination and unflagging persistence that defines their performance.
Surviving training schedules, setbacks, injuries and disappointments are all measures of the extent of self-motivation in a sportsperson.
Positive Energy
Positive factors such as team spirit, joy, love for the sport, and a feeling of freedom contribute to positive energies that surround a sports-person. Thus it is through these energies that motivation can be derived by an athlete, and use into fueling performance, maintaining calm in times of worries, reduce unnecessary stress sustained and sustain high energy in performances.
Self-Confidence
It is known that most of the high-rising sportspersons have a high level of self-confidence. Being sure of what their aim is and what they want out of life, they can channel their energies into achieving that goal. Self-confidence also makes people take higher risks.
Positive Self-talk
An athlete’s powerful inner voice can work wonders in reinforcing self-esteem. Thus positive self-talk does much to enhance motivation. It has been proven that such self-talk can positively alter an athlete’s belief in herself and her sport. There are three types of self-talk. The first type, known as task-relevant self-talk, focusses an athlete’s attention on the task that needs to be completed. The second type is known as mood-related self-talk and deals with an athlete’s feelings and moods. The third type, which is known as positive self-affirmation statement, consists of maintaining a high opinion on oneself and thus increasing motivation and confidence.
Goal Setting
Setting up ambitious goals helps a lot in keeping an athlete in tune with his performance and requirements. To keep track of long-term goals, there should be appropriate acheivable medium-term goals too. However, it is the short-term goals that keep athletes focused on the most essential and foundational aspects that are needed for a superior performance. Goals should always be monitored and revised, for better performance.
Flow
Flow means complete devotion to the given activity, so much so that slowly other things start mattering less. When an althete is ‘in the flow’, then a perfect match exists between demands of an activity and the athlete’s efforts towards them. Too many challenges can cause anxiety, while too much skill into an activity results in boredom. Thus, to promote flow, one should find challenges that stretch just a little ahead of their previous task.
Motivational Music
Inspirational music has also been used by many sportswomen to reduce exertion and increase work output.
Hypnotherapy
Inner energy and self-belief that is essential to a sportswoman is induced by Hypnotherapy. It also helps keep goals in perspective with one’s own individual strengths.
