Women’s Running Apparel
Women’s running apparel has come a long way since the cotton jerseys of the initial years. The introduction of high performance fabrics is the turning point in the apparel industry these days
Running Apparel
A wide range of running apparel is manufactured by leading companies like Nike and Adidas. Good quality and durable running apparel is an investment for athletes as it ensures increased comfort and health. Women’s running apparel includes sport jackets, shorts, running or track suits, body suits made of stretchable materials, tops, running tights, and socks. Shorts with drawstring waist and tops are an all time favorite. In cooler climates wear clothes that keep you warm which may include a bonnet, long sleeved garments, tights, snug leggings, gloves or a pair of mittens. For women selection of proper sports bra is equally important since it minimizes the damage to the ligaments of the breast
Running Apparel: Criteria of Selection
Easy Movement
Running requires easy movements. Hence apparel that does not flutter in the wind is preferred in highly competitive events.
Light Weight
Lesser weight provides greater speed. Ultra light weight clothing made of synthetic fibers is preferred by athletes.
Breathable Fabrics
Breathable fabrics made of synthetic materials are used by most athletes. Such fabrics have small pores in the texture which allow sweat vapor to escape but prevent moisture from getting in. CoolMax is an example. Polypropylene is another synthetic fabric that has moisture management abilities. It keeps you cool during warm weather and warm during cold weather.
Stretchable Fabrics
Stretchable fabrics are preferred these days owing to their comfort and light weight. They minimize friction and help maintain speed. Lycra is an example.
Environmental considerations
Cloths used in hot and humid weather are not suitable for cooler climates. Tights, gloves, snug leggings or long sleeves are required for cooler climates.
Running in Warm and Cold Weathers
One solution to counter the cold climate is layering. The base layer should be a moisture wicking shirt, like CoolMax. Middle layers are heavier. They can be removed if need be. Some of the fabrics used for middle layering include Polartec, Thermax and fleece. The outer layer can be a light weight, windproof jacket. A microfiber, ventilating jacket is ideal. Lower body should be covered in two layers in extreme cold climates. Fabrics ideal are microfiber, micromesh, Lycra, tactel. Cool Max or microfleece. In warm weathers always avoid pure cotton. Instead, choose shorts made of Supplex nylon, or CoolMax.
Selection of Socks
Selection of socks is equally important. As a general rule stay away from pure cotton socks. Socks made of synthetic materials that can wick moisture away are preferable. They help prevent blisters as well. Different types of socks are used for different type of running. Long distance runners and trail runners can use thick socks. Sprinters on the other hand can opt for lighter socks.
