Herbs for Women Athletes

Herbs are increasingly used these days for healing purposes and boost the immune system. They are preferred for the simple reason that they are close to nature and have minimal side effects.

Claw of the Devil

The claw of the devil belongs originally to Africa. Anti-inflammatory property of its roots makes it an efficient medicine for rheumatism and arthrosis. It also helps improve mobility. Athletes use it mainly to avoid tendinitis and the articular pains. This herb also has the ability to eliminate the uric acid in the body. However pregnant women should not use this herb.

Basil

Basil is an aromatic plant with hairy stems, round-oval leaves and white or reddish flowers. It is used as a medicine for chronic gastritis and stomach aches. Basil also has sedative, diuretic and antiseptic properties. It has proved its efficacy in the treatment of   gastro-intestinal and renal infections, bronchitis and fever.  Basil leaf tea is used to cure nervous system fatigue, insomnia and painful menstruation.

Aloe

Aloe comes in various varieties of products like aloe juice, aloe gel, and aloe vera. It is mainly used to soothe sunburns or minor pains. Also it has been extensively used in hair care. It has been pointed out that aloe is an invaluable herb whose medicinal properties can be used to cure a wide range of ailments that include many digestive problems.

Ginger

Ginger has been used to cure inflammation of the joints and muscle tissue in arthritis and rheumatism. The active agents in ginger contribute to its antiseptic qualities, lymph-cleansing, circulation-stimulating and mild constipation relief. Ginger also has the ability to reduce blood cholesterol. In the traditional medicine it is used to relieve sore throats. It is also used to ease nervousness and tendonitis.

Research has shown that ginger can be used in the treatment of migraine since it blocks the effects of prostaglandin responsible for the inflammation of the blood vessels in the brain leading to migraine. The Cineole present in ginger provides stress relief also. Consuming ginger tea during periods is good to ease menstrual cramps.

Ginkgo

Ginkgo biloba boosts the vascular system. It increases the blood flow and thereby aids in oxygen supply to the vital organs. Ginkgo is also an efficient cure for relaxing the constricted coronary arteries. It is also used for stress relief. Ginkgo biloba controls platelet activity factor (PAF) whose excessiveness can cause physical stress, brain disorder, and skin problems like psoriasis, cardiovascular disease and hearing disorders. Ginkgo is also an antioxidant and boosts cardiovascular and central nervous system (CNS).

Side Effects of Ginkgo

Ginkgo should never be combined with certain antidepressants such as MAO (mono amine oxidase). Also people taking medicine for blood clotting disorders should avoid ginkgo biloba, as it will aggravate the effects of the prescribed medicine. It should not be taken during or just before pregnancy. Side effects of Ginkgo include gastrointestinal disorders, blood clotting disorders, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, and restlessness.

Herbal Supplements

Herbal supplements are mixtures of natural herbs, oils, and minerals which contribute to the nutrition requirements of the body. They are available in different forms like capsules, liquid and powders. However it is always better to take them after consulting the physician.
