What Are Fat Burners?

The term fat burners refer to pills, also known as supplement pills that have certain herbal contents like Ephedra (ephedrine), Chitosan and Pyruvate. Fat burners are supposed to increase energy, boost metabolism and/or suppress appetite.

What is Ephedra (Ephedrine)?

Ephedrine is similar to amphetamine. It is a compound which activates the nervous system and the functions of the heart. Mainly it is used for weight loss, boosting performance or body building.

Adverse Effects of Ephedra

Adverse reports on ephedrine have been received by the FDA since 1994 onwards. Consequently it is banned these days. Reports suggest that ephedra is instrumental in high blood pressure, heart rate variations, nervousness, insomnia, headaches, heart attacks, seizures and strokes in many cases.

What is Chitosan?

Chitosan is made from the external skeletons of marine animals, like crabs. It sticks to fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K, which restrains the body from absorbing them.

Adverse Effects of Chitosan

It has been reported that Chitosan affects the absorption of carotenoids which are converted into vitamin A by the body.

What is Pyruvate?

Pyruvate is produced out of sugar metabolism. Its exponents advocate its ability to reduce weight, cholesterol, and boost endurance.

Do Fat Burners Work?

There is no scientific proof that fat burners really produce good results. Further research is required in many cases. Since the supplements are not standardized, there is no way to check the purity of the contents. The long-term effects of these substances are to be studied further like  how they interact with other compounds or medication.

Alternative to Fat Burners

Instead of going after energy pills and fat burners, athletes can opt for a safer, healthy diet. A model, fat controlled diet may contain the following:

  • Tuna, white meat chicken, or turkey breast mixed in a salad with peppers, mushrooms, onions, carrots, celery and cucumber. Avoid tomatoes.
  • Grilled fish, like salmon, or chicken breast or turkey breast, and 1 cup of mixed vegetables.
  • Turkey breast meat on whole-grain pita bread with spinach and sprouts.
  • Protein shake of about 300 calories, a half ripe banana, three  low-sodium rice cakes.
